This
museum operates in the house built by Captain Juan Hernández y Enríquez
in 1870. Its architecture is typical of the period under Spanish
dominion. The rooms are interconnected and open onto a central courtyard.
The walls on the groundfloor are made of stone and brick, whilst
those on the upper floor are made of adobe masonry. This house,
which was declared a National Historic Monument, has been restored
recently. Exhibits include different items related to primitive
customs of the city of Salta. The ground floor houses the Güemes
Hall decorated with 18th and 19th century furniture and overlooked
by the painting of Güemes by Lorenzo Gigli, and the hall named after
Professor María Teresa Cadena de Hessling where temporary exhibitions
are held.
On the upper floor there are oil paintings and photographs belonging
to former mayors from 1857 onwards; furniture, cameras, objects
of everyday life, plans and photographs that enable one to follow
the course of architectural development in Salta as well as photographs
of public buildings together with pertinent information.
Salta
The city of Salta, capital of the province, is located in a valley
that lies 1,610km. away from the City of Buenos Aires and 1,187m
above sea level. In addition to the various museums in the city,
it is also worthwhile visiting the Convent of St. Bernard with its
large wooden doorcarved by the indians, the Monument to General
Güemes and the cerro San Bernardo which offers a panoramic view
of the entire Lerma Valley.
