This
museum has one large hall containing over 5,000 pieces related to
the history of the region. Amongst its most valuable exhibits, there
is a collection of candelabra that belonged to the old cathedral
of San Juan before it was entirely destroyed by an earthquake in
1944. There are holographic letters by Sarmiento and Roca , whistles
made of cow horn, old-fashioned saddles and riding gear, silver-crafted
jewels from Temuco (Chile), and fragments of Indian vessels, arrowheads
and woven fabrics colored with vegetable eyes. The museum belongs
to the Argentine Catholic University of Cuyo. It also harbors a
collection of over 40 paintings, the collection of the "Caras y
Caretas" magazine, two "nironas" (small photographs) and perforated
cardboard and paste records. The Nacif Weiss brothers were two collectionists
who donated all the pieces to create the museum.
