This
museum is devoted to the history of the old city of Santa Fe and
is a real testimony of everyday urban life in the early times of
the Hispanic period. In addition to the exhibits contained in its
two halls, a site museum has been set up on the location of the
old city on the river banks where one can observe the ruins of the
church of St. Francis with its open graves.
The primitive city was abandoned approximately in the year 1670,
and the temple and the undergrowth gradually buried the vestiges
of nearly one century of life. The decision of moving the city to
another location was taken because it remained isolated during the
periods when the river waters rose and because of the increasingly
frequent attacks of the "Calchaquí" Indians.
Cayastá
Cayastá is located on provincial route No.1, 78km away from the
capital of the province.
