This
museum functions in an old family home dating from over 200 years
ago and located in the neighborhood known as Las Catalinas in the
oldest part of the city. This house was frequented by civil, military
and ecclesiastic personalities from the colonial period and the
period of independence. Its 12 halls harbor portraits, oil paintings,
documents, weapons, coats of arms, medals and other historical objects.
It was founded in 1941 by the local researcher Orestes Di Lullo,
who was its director for many years. The museum has a hall devoted
to Sacred Art containing an 18th century wooden tabernacle. There
are also 18th and 19th century weapons, portraits of all the governors
of Santiago del Estero starting off from Juan Felipe Ibarra in 1820,
manuscripts belonging to San Martín and Manuel Belgrano, some personal
effects belonging to Guillenno Brown, portraits of Juan Francisco
Borges who fought for the autonomy of the province, and belongings
of the Ibarra and Taboada families such as English and French tableware,
fans, jewel boxes and musical instruments, namely, a piano and a
harp.
Santiago
del Estero
This is the oldest surviving city founded by the Spaniards. It is
located on the river Dulce, 1,042km. away from the city of Buenos
Aires, on national route No. 9 and 187m. above sea level. In addition
to its museums, one can also visit its cathedral, the first diocese
in the country dating back to 1876, Libertad Park, Aguirre Park,
the Convent of Santo Domingo where the Holy Sheet is exhibited,
and the Church of La Merced.
