the foundation stone of San Francisco Solano. It has only one exhibition
hall where one can become acquainted with the history of the old
village of Río Hondo that was already inhabited in 1520, proof of
which is a photograph of a house on which this year is engraved
in Roman numerals. There is a panel describing the exodus of the
population and photographs of people carrying their saints in procession
to their new homes. Exhibits also include photographs of the school
and of the large sheds where the carnival celebrations were held,
as well as tires and bricks that belonged to the chapel. There are
also small earthen jars belonging to the Quichua culture that were
used for funerary offerings and antique furniture dating from the
19th century.
Termas
de Río Hondo
This city lies on the banks of the river Dulce and is the main touristic
attraction of the province because of the quality of its thermal
waters. It is located 65km. away from Santiago del Estero on national
route No. 9, and 90km. away from San Miguel de Tucumán. It was originally
known simply by the name of Termas, but after the small town of
Río Hondo disappeared under the waters when the dam was built, it
was renamed Termas de Río Hondo. The city has over 150 hotels and
inns which are always full to capacity during the winter months.
