The
exhibits in this museum were donated by two private collectors,
namely, Juan Bautista Giménez and Roque Gómez. The museum has archaeological
and paleontologic material. The lithic pieces were found in the
south of the province and belong to groups of hunter-gatherers with
no pottery. Some of the pieces date back to between 3,000 and 4,000
years B.C. The pottery exhibited belongs to later groups from the
Argentine Northwest, dating from approximately 300 or 400 A.D. There
is also wickerwork, woven articles and potsherds belonging to a
culture known by the name of Las Mercedes. lt has a funerary urn
with a representation of a figure playing the flute on its neck.
Horned owls and barn owls were amongst the figures used most frequently
to decorate pottery.
