This museum functions in a large old colonial house that belonged
to the Colombres Thames family. It is built of large bricks laid
on clay, has quebracho beams, Spanish tiles, rough whitewashed plaster
walls, and three practically identical openings on the front - a
door and two windows - with very simple railings. It houses an important
collection of silverwork from Peru including belts with fancy buckles,
spurs, mates and bombillas, knife sheaths and saddle adornments.
Amongst the objects on exhibition there are articles woven in wool
obtained from llamas, vicuñas, alpacas, and sheep including carpets,
rugs, tapestries and the traditional ponchos.
There is an area devoted to musical instruments such as guitars,
charangos, violins, harps, quenas and sikus (Indian reed flutes),
erques and cajas and bombos (small and large drums). There is also
a reproduction of a northern rancho (hut) with all its typical characteristics.
The Handicraft Market.
