This
museum harbors valuable artistic treasures composed of the things
that used to belong to the old cathedral - which was as old as the
city itself - and were gradually abandoned as ritual objects. The
Museum of Sacred Art was created in 1968 in order to preserve all
this wealth. The entrance to this museum is through one of the Cathedral´s
side doors. Exhibits include a spectacular silver tabernacle that
was used in the Cathedral in 1691, during colonial times, the hat
that belonged to Friar Mamerto Esquiú, paintings from the Cuzco
school from the 17th century onwards, and a series of documents
including birth certificates of notable members of the local society.
