In 1915, a decree issued by governor Ernesto Padilla ordered the
creation of the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts, but it was not until
decades later - 1977 - that this institution was granted its own
premises. It now functions in the building formerly occupied by
the Council of Education. The architecture of this building responds
to an academizing style denoting French influence. The large hall
that doubles the rest of the construction in height is crowned with
a dome that is virtually baroque in style, and has a movable glass
roof with a large skylight. The museum harbors works by some of
Tucuman´s most outstanding artists, namely, Ignacio Baz, Atilio
Terragni, Santiago Falcucci, Renato Droghetti, Timoteo Navarro and
Demetrio Iramaín, as well as works by great Argentine artists such
as Collivadino, Fioravanti, Quinquela Martín, Thibon de Libian,
Policastro, Daneri, Alonso, Victorica, Spilimbergo and Berni, amongst
others.
San
Miguel de Tucumán
The city of San Miguel de Tucumán, capital of the province, is located
1,303km. away from the Capital City, on national route No. 9, and
447m. above sea level. It is the most important industrial and commercial
city in the Argentine Northwest, and has several touristic attractions
in the surroundings, such as Villa Nogués, cerro San Javier and
El Cadillal dam.
