It is the commercial, cultural and industrial centre in north-west Argentina. It was the birthplace of independence. Some remarkable buildings are the Hotel Savoy (today a casino), the San Martín theatre, and the House of Parliament, dating back to 1916. Other examples of its colonial architecture include the Casa de Obispo Colombres, the Casa de la Peña El Cardón and the Museo Folklórico. |

FROM THE PARQUE PROVINCIAL EL COCHUNA TO THE RUINS OF QUILMES
The Parque Provincial El Cochuna has a large variety of sub-tropical vegetation. At a distance of 13km and at a height of 1,750m lies the Laguna del Tesoro (Treasure lagoon), a place place of extraordinary beauty, surrounded by high mountains at whose feet depths, according to legend, hide a treasure. Tafí del Valle lies at the foot of the sierra Aconquija. Los Menhires Park amazes the visitor with its 130 monoliths of stone carved by the Tafí indians, with signs still to be deciphered.
On the way to Cafayate you pass the Ruinas de Quilmes, a fortified citadel built by the Quilme indians. |
